Juan Mata’s contract with Manchester United is about to expire, and the negotiations over a new deal haven’t reached a positive outcome yet. According to Sport, the reason for that is the Spaniard’s wish to return to his homeland and play for Barcelona. Mata has apparently rejected all offers to stay at Old Trafford and is determined to leave the club.
The contract was originally set to expire last summer, but United triggered a one-year extension option they had put in it. There are no such tools at their disposal this time around.
Apparently, everything has been agreed and the 31-year-old midfielder, also capable of serving as a wide forward, will move to Nou Camp this summer, but the official announcement has been held off until Barca’s Champions League campaign ends.
The Catalans play Liverpool in the return leg of the semifinal at Anfield tonight (Tuesday), having beaten the English side in the first game by 3-0.
