Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels could be back on Manchester United’s radar, after the Red Devils look to have lost out on their previous target Thomas Vermaelen, who is reportedly on his way to FC Barcelona in a £10M deal.
The German international, 25, recently won this summer’s World Cup with his country, and has been regarded as one of the bet current centre-backs in the world. United manager Louis van Gaal will be hoping he can persuade Hummels to move as Dortmund’s chances of silverware are incredibly slim due to the strength of fierce rivals Bayern Munich.
As a result, Ladbrokes are giving odds of 11/4 for Mats Hummels to join Manchester United, who are running out of time to find their experienced defender.
Such is United’s young average age of their backline, van Gaal has been after a defender to help marshal the likes of Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones as the manager may opt for three central defenders in his starting lineup this season.
