Mazzarri in no rush to re-sign with Napoli

Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri insists he could still walk away from the job despite being on the cusp of securing Champions League qualification.

Mazzarri, 49, said he would have many things to consider before putting pen to paper on a new deal with Napoli, who are eight points clear of fourth-placed Lazio, who have a game in hand.

Third place would secure automatic qualification for next year’s Champions League, but it is understood Mazzarri wants to strengthen his squad before taking on Europe’s premier club competition, and will wait for the season to end before discussing his future.

“No, I will not put an end to the renewal issue, because the season has to terminate first,” Mazzarri told Sky Sport Italia.

“I speak the truth and don’t want to be ambiguous. First of all you reach your targets, then you sit around a table and understand what the situation is.”

“I did it last season as well and will do this in the summer. A coach has to consider many things.”

The Napoli boss said improving his squad depth had to be a chief priority for an extended Champions League run.

“The (1-0 Serie A) victory over Genoa is worth a great deal, although we aren’t mathematically qualified yet,” he said.

“The Champions League is a tough competition with a very high level and to give a good account of ourselves we must involve many factors. You need strength in depth and two great players for every position.”
