Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has sent Kylian Mbappe a sharp but very clear ultimatum: he will either sign a new contract, or leave the club this summer, a year before his current deal expires. He won’t leave for free.
“Our position is very clear,” Al-Khelaifi said at a press conference on Wednesday, where Luis Enrique was unveiled as the new head coach.
“If Kylian Mbappe wants to stay – we want him to stay – he needs to sign a new contract.
“We cannot let the best player in the world right now leave for free. That is impossible.”
“This is a French club and, as he has said, he is not planning to leave for free. If somebody has changed his mind, it is not our fault.”
Al-Khelaifi also stressed that no player or anyone else, including himself, wasn’t bigger than the club itself.
There have been reports suggesting PSG wouldn’t be open to selling Mbappe to Real Madrid, but Fabrizio Romano says that’s not the case. PSG would be open to selling Mbappe to any club, providing he refuses to sign a new contract and their price is met.
What that price may be, however, remains to be seen.
