Mbemba completes Newcastle move

Newcastle United F.C. have completed the signing of defender Chancel Mbemba from R.S.C. Anderlecht for a fee of around £8.5 million.

Newcastle United F.C. have completed the signing of defender Chancel Mbemba from R.S.C. Anderlecht for a fee of around £8.5 million.

The Democratic Republic of Congo international, 20, becomes the Magpies’ third summer signing following the arrivals of Aleksandar Mitrovic (Anderlecht) and Georginio Wijnaldum (PSV Eindhoven).

Mbemba, who made his first-team debut against K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen on 28 July 2013, has put pen to paper on a five-year deal at St James’ Park.

“This is the biggest league in the world and I’m very proud to wear the shirt for this team and play in this league,” said Mbemba.

“I’m going to do everything I can to help make the supporters happy, to help out my teammates and to bring something extra to the team.

“I know the team very well. I’ve watched the Premier League and I know this is a massive team with big players and with a great coach. I’ve come here to Newcastle United because it’s a very good move in my career to play for such a famous club. I am excited for the season ahead.”

Newcastle boss Steve McClaren added: “We are delighted that Chancel is now a Newcastle United player after it took a little longer than we had hoped.

“He is a proven performer at the highest level, he’s powerful, combative and will add quality to our defence. He also has an eye for goal which is an extra asset for us.

“We will get him integrated into the squad quickly once he is with us. Unfortunately, due to the time it takes to process the visa application that won’t be in time for our final friendly on Saturday, but our focus will be to make sure he will be ready and available as soon as possible.

“I’m sure our supporters will take to him very quickly. He’s the sort of player fans will enjoy watching.”

Mbemba scored six goals in 28 Jupiler Pro League appearances for Anderlecht in 2014/15.

Gomez joins Besiktas

Besiktas have confirmed the signing of Mario Gomez from Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal.

Gomez, who joined Fiorentina from Bayern Munich for a reported fee of  €20 million in the summer of 2013, will likely be the club’s No. 1 striker following the exit of Demba Ba (Shanghai Shenhua).

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Besiktas announce that on Thursday the club reached an agreement with Fiorentina for the loan of Mario Garcia Gomez.

“The contract includes an option to make the deal permanent.”

Gomez scored just four goals in 20 Serie A appearances for the Viola last season.
