McCarthy: ´Lack of quality´ hurt Wolves

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy claimed it just was not his side’s day as they lost 2-1 at Blackpool in the English Premier League on Saturday.

Luke Varney’s stunning volley after just two minutes and Marlon Harewood’s effort put Blackpool in command before Kevin Doyle reduced arrears late on.

McCarthy said: “When we hit the post (through midfielder Nenad Milijas in the second half) I didn’t think it was going to be our day.”

“We got one back but it wasn’t enough. It was a wonder strike but we shouldn’t have allowed them to get that opportunity.”

“Our part in Varney’s goal was poor to be honest with you. Kevin Foley was having a tough time. He has done well this year but he was having a tough time so I moved him to midfield.”

“Ian Evatt did brilliantly to clear off the line for them but I would have liked to have seen one of our players slide it into the net.”

“To stop conceding after 50 seconds would really help us. I’m at a loss as to what they do to coach that – we need to stay in our half, keep the ball and go from there. That would be a good starting point.”

Wolves never gave up hope – something McCarthy says is typical of teams he manages.

He said: “You never accuse a team of mine of not trying but we lacked a little bit of quality when we had the opportunities.”

“All those managers know whatever league you’re in you need a result and if you don’t get them, the pressure mounts.”

“I don’t sit and worry about that, I just want to get points.”
