McCarthy lets fly at ´mindless idiots´

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has criticised a section of fans for their reaction to going 2-0 down against Swansea on Saturday.

Chants of ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ followed Joe Allen’s strike that put the Swans 2-0 up in their Premier League clash.

McCarthy says the chants help nobody, and the fans would do well to remember the five great years the club has had under his tenure.

“We’d lost five on the bounce, we are 2-0 down, it’s not a good position,” McCarthy said.

“Do I like being there? Do I heck. Nobody does. But [the abuse] is not helpful. I almost think some turn up hoping it is going to be that way so they can have their whinge and get shot of the manager. They are not going to get shot of the chairman or the players – ‘let’s give it to the gaffer’.”

“Do they have short memories? I’ve done a great job here. Five years ago, a million quid, 10 players. Five years on we are building the new stadium but we are having a tough time. Come on, give the lads a bit of support.”

Despite the criticism, McCarthy was also quick to tell of the support he has received from Wolves fans this week.

“Let me clear up as well, I’ve also had unbelievable support this week, from the players, everyone at the club, and from fans writing and emailing in,” he said.

Having been 2-0 down before half-time in Saturday’s early kick-off, McCarthy’s men rallied and managed to salvage a point thanks to late goals from Kevin Doyle and Jamie O’Hara. However, McCarthy refuses to let the fans who were complaining take the credit for the turnaround, and says it was all his own work.

“I’m taking the credit,” he added.

“Let’s not give any of the dissenting voices, the mindless idiots that do it, whether it’s at me or Karl Henry or Andy Keogh or Stephen Ward, any credence or any credit for getting us playing well or getting a result, because they don’t deserve any of that.”

“I got Jamie O’Hara further up the pitch, and [it was down to] the players that went on, and the attitude they had.”

“The players are all with me, don’t anyone think any different, and I’m with them. We’ve a great spirit amongst us.”
