FC Twente coach Steve McClaren bemoaned his side’s failure to finish off NAC Breda despite their 1-0 Eredivisie victory on Saturday.
McLaren’s side hit the front six minutes in to the second half when Leroy Fer scored but Twente could not find a second goal to wrap up the win.
It ensured a nervy end to the game for the visitors as over 15,000 fans roared Breda on in their search for an equalising goal.
“We said they will fight for 95 minutes, the crowd keeps them going, it’s a great atmosphere and it was a difficult night,” McLaren said on Saturday.
“The heat, the pitch was slow and the tempo was not so high.
“But, we totally dominated.
“We were disappointed at half-time, we thought we could play better, still we created chances, and in the second-half once we got the goal we created so many, but we didn’t kill them.”
McLaren was disappointed Twente failed to learn from their two tough matches against Breda last season.
The Englishman’s side were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Breda last season, and stole a 1-0 win away.
McClaren said his side allowed Breda to get back in the game and warned his players they will not always be so lucky.
“Yeah, we deserved to win the game and we were dominant,” McLaren said.
“Then, as normal, when you give them a bit of encouragement, they take more risk and then you need to get the second goal.
“We didn’t and nearly got punished.”
