McClaren pleased with Wolfsburg´s ´perfect´ week

Ex-England coach Steve McClaren insisted Wednesday he will not rest on his laurels despite what he describes as the ‘perfect week’ which saw Wolfsburg break into the Bundesliga’s top six.

Having started his first season in charge with three straight defeats, McClaren’s side bounced back with two German league wins last week to go sixth in the table last weekend.

First, strikers Edin Dzeko and Brazil’s Grafite scored all three goals in the 3-1 win over Hamburg last Wednesday with the Brazilian scoring twice.

Then Grafite picked up his fourth goal in two games when he netted twice against Freiburg in a 2-1 win last Sunday to put McClaren on cloud nine, but vowing to improve the 2009 Bundesliga champion’s form.

“We have shown that we possess quality but we can still get better and we are working very hard to do just that,” said McClaren on Wolfsburg’s website.

After Wolfsburg sold playmaker Zvjezdan Misimovic to Galatasary and bought Brazilian midfielder Diego from AC Milan at the start of the season, McClaren’s side initially failed to adapt, but have now hit form.

“We made changes, switched things around and improved our attitude. The team understood the situation and due to that they began winning games,” he said.

The trio of Grafite, Edin Dzeko and Diego is now starting to click, which pleases the ex-England manager who failed to guide the Three Lions to the Euro 2008 finals.

“They play wonderfully together and are very important for us, but the team have been working hard as a unit and have gelled together very well,” said McClaren.

Wolfsburg play Moenchengladbach on Saturday in the Bundesliga looking for their fourth straight win, but McClaren says they will most certainly not be a push-over.

“I think, looking at their (2-2 draw) against Schalke, it is clear to see that this will not be an easy match,” said McClaren.

“They were not far off getting a win there. They are also particularly dangerous at home.

“We must have respect for our opponent and not underestimate them. Of course our attitude also has to be right.”
