The last month has seen some great soccer matches with the Euros and the Copa America seeing the top South American and European nations battling it out. Argentina lifted the Copa America after an extra-time goal from Lautaro Martinez saw them defeat Colombia.

In Germany, England fans had been hopeful that their time had come to win a major tournament for the first time since 1966, but Spain had other ideas.

While English fans were left licking their wounds and manager Gareth Southgate vacated his post the following day, one football fan was not disappointed in the least. Famous fighter Connor McGregor not only reveled in watching England being defeated, he also made a tidy sum.

McGregor’s Betting History

As sports betting expert Chirag Dubey explains, the best online betting sites will offer a variety of sports markets and competitive odds. Connor McGregor was lucky enough to make the most of this and earned a cool million by backing the Spanish to win.

McGregor would have won even more if Spain had won 3-1, but he was happy enough with what he did win. The other bet he placed on the Euros was for Christiano Ronaldo to win the tournament’s Golden Boot for the most goals scored. The Portuguese legend failed to find the net for the first time in a major tournament in his career.

While McGregor isn’t short of a dollar or two thanks to his fighting and movie career, he bagged more winnings earlier in the month by backing Nate Diaz in his boxing bout with Jorge Masvidal.

Luck of the Irish in the Euro Final

McGregor was left waiting until the 86th minute for Spain’s Mikel Uyarzabel to net the winner. This came after substitute Cole Palmer equalized Nico William’s opener.

McGregor and the entire Spanish nation had a nervous few moments after the late goal as replays were checked to see if there was a possible offside in the move. However, the goal stood and Spain won their record-breaking fourth European Championship.

Neutrals would say the result was fair, with Spain edging England performance-wise. Spain’s prodigious young talent Lamine Yamal, who only turned 17 the day before the final, also got an assist in the win. He also has a couple of chances to win it, but the future is definitely bright for this talented Barcelona youngster.

England will move on to a new chapter following their manager Gareth Southgate’s decision to step down from his role following the defeat. This means England will be looking to appoint a new manager, and a selection of sports books and crypto gambling sites are already offering odds on the next manager with current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe leading the way.

Why England Didn’t Have More Fans Closer to Home

Anyone with any understanding of the political tensions between Ireland and England over the years will understand why McGregor backed the Spanish to win. As well as the Irish, many Scottish and Welsh fans also took to social media to declare their allegiance to the Spanish.

After this win, McGregor will be focusing on his fighting career following the postponement of his arranged fight at UFC 303 with Michael Chandler. Injury forced him to back out, but the fight is set to be rescheduled soon.
