(GSM) – Colombian side Independiente Medellin are still in contention in Group 1 of the Copa Libertadores following a narrow win over Cerro Porteño.

Neither side had managed to win any of their previous four games, but Medellin at least collected a few points from draws and knew that a win over Cerro would give them a small chance of survival.

The match at Medellin’s Atanasio Girardot had been underway for 56 minutes when Luis Arias scored what turned out to be the only goal.

Cerro’s Rodrigo Burgos was sent off eight minutes after the hour, further reducing Cerro’s chance of fighting their way back into the game.

Medellin remain in third place at one point from Uruguayan side Racing Club, who have next week’s home game with Corinthians in hand.
