Making their first Ligue 1 appearance of the new campaign on Friday night, Champions League semi-finalists Lyon will host Dijon from behind closed doors this weekend.
Starting with the hosts, while Lyon might have seen their Champions League adventure come to an abrupt end after a 3-0 semi-final defeat against eventual winners Bayern Munich, Rudi Garcia’s men will no doubt take plenty of solace from a stunning run. Along with knocking out Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus over two legs, the former Marseille boss also saw his side pick up a real heavyweight scalp after a dramatic 3-1 romp against Manchester City. Given the time to recover from a knee injury due to the enforced break, a red-hot Memphis Depay really caught the eye this summer and will be looking to drag that form into the new Ligue 1 campaign. Spearheading Lyon’s European charge and finding the net in back-to-back matchups against the Serie A champions, the former Manchester United winger recorded five goals in his final seven Champions League contests.
As for the visitors, while Dijon might have managed to just about hold onto their Ligue 1 status after last year’s campaign was brought to an early finish, the Owls have endured another torrid summer. Hit with back-to-back friendly defeats against top-flight returners Lens and Metz earlier in the month, Head Coach Stéphane Jobard also saw his side open the New Year in worrying fashion last weekend. Putting in what was a torrid display and hit with a 1-0 defeat at home against Angers, Dijon managed to win just one of their last seven Ligue 1 contests carrying on from last season. Given an unenviable trip to Lyon on Friday night, a Lyon side led by a red-hot Depay should be looking to lay down an early marker as they seek a top-four return this year.
