Desperate to get their European adventure off to a flying start on Sunday night, Holland will welcome Ukraine to the Johan Cruijff Arena in Amsterdam for their Group C opener.
Starting with the hosts, after being left disappointed to have only snatched a late 2-2 draw off of Scotland last week, Holland would have been glad to sign off their preparations with a much-needed victory. Eventually securing what was a routine 3-0 win against Georgia, Frank de Boer’s side are desperate to mark their return to the major tournament stage with a flurry this weekend. Tipped as the early pick to land to spot in Group C, the one-time Crystal Palace boss will be calling on attacking talisman Memphis Depay to spearhead their charge at the Johan Cruijff Arena. Enjoying what was another free-scoring run during Holland’s friendly preparations last week, the Lyon striker has now bagged 27 goals for club and country this season and has been continuously linked with a potential blockbuster move to Barcelona this summer.
As for the visitors, although Ukraine might have managed to sign off their own preparations last week with back-to-back wins against Cyrus and Northern Ireland, it does not cover what has been an inconsistent run over the past nine months. Shocking many as they could only muster a sluggish 1-1 draw against Bahrain on home soil, Andriy Shevchenko’s men should face another stern test this weekend. Suffering a 3-0 defeat in their only previous trip to Amsterdam, the former AC Milan star will have a real headache over his side’s continued struggles on foreign soil. Ukraine have failed to win any of their last seven straight matchups on the road, a run that stems all the way back to September 2019. Hit with 4-0 and 7-1 defeats against Spain and France on that worrying away spell, Holland’s attacking talisman should be smelling a golden chance to open his account.
