Having followed up a 4-0 thrashing of Stuttgart by qualifying in midweek for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup, things appeared to be on the up at last for Werder Bremen. Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Dortmund however signalled a return to the inconsistency that has marked their season to date, as Per Mertesacker affirmed to bundesliga.de.
“We wanted to continue our upward curve of the last few weeks at Dortmund and maintain a bit of consistency. That’s been lacking in the league in particular. The result is very disappointing, but it’s typical of the entire season. We could have got more out of the game”.
“We simply have to take those kind of opportunities, to score the goal that takes the pressure off us. Once you’re in front, you can give yourself a breather now and then. But as it stands, we’re just making things hard for ourselves. We were under pressure all the time, and the fact that we lost out in the end due to an unfortunate penalty decision doesn’t make it any better”.
