Lionel Messi is likely to extend his stay at Barcelona beyond next summer after Josep Maria Bartomeu resigned as club president, according to The Times.
The 33-year-old superstar has been fiercely opposed to the way Bartomeu was running the club, and while being heavily linked with Manchester City, he demanded to be allowed to leave on a free transfer over the summer. Barcelona refused to do so with Bartomeu later stating that he had refused to contemplate Messi joining a rival, and being unwilling to go to court over the matter, Messi decided to stay put for the remainder of his contract which expires at the end of the season.
However, Barcelona confirmed that Bartomeu has resigned from his post on Tuesday, and it seems that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner is now likely to sign a new deal. The elections for a new board will take place soon, and it is expected that whoever gets the top job would do their best to have a better relationship with Messi.
