(GSM) – Barcelona forward Lionel Messi beat last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo into second place in the poll for Europe’s footballer of the year, organized by France Football magazine.

Messi, 22, the first Argentine to win the prestigious trophy, becomes the sixth Barcelona player to take the award but the first for four years since Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho.

Hailed by Argentina great Diego Maradona as his successor, Messi won an unprecedented treble in Spain last season, as the Catalan side swept the Champions League, the Spanish title and the Copa Del Rey. Messi was the top scorer in last year’s Champions League with nine goals, including his superb header in the 2-0 victory over Manchester United in the final.

Messi, who tallied 473 of a possible 480 points, largely dominated the voting and won with a record-margin of 240 points. Real Madrid winger Ronaldo had 233 and Xavi had 170.

Messi told France Football: “Honestly, I knew that I was among the favorites because Barcelona had a fruitful year in 2009.”

“But I didn’t expect to win with such a margin. The Ballon d’Or is very important to me. All the players who won it were great players, and some great players never won it.”

“For me it’s a big honour to win. I dedicate it to my family, they were always present when I needed them and sometimes felt even stronger emotions than me,” he added.

Messi will lead Argentina to next year’s World Cup in South Africa. He has recently signed a new contract with Barcelona through 2016 and has a buyout clause of 250 million euros.

    haha…

    that’s hilarious Baka…

I agree – CR7 was better than CR9 – why he wanted to be CR9? Who knows, who cares, it’s Real’s problem now and what a problem it is! He had it really good at Man U – he was surrounded by the right type of players, he had the perfect coach, he had amazing fans – but I guess he gave it all up for a little more sunshine and some childhood dreams of what Real Madrid used to be…oh ya – and a grand entrance where Real made him seem like their toy monkey…”do a trick for us! Yay! Now go make Real a lot of money!”…I hoped for the best, but it is what it is now…is it just me, or did everybody on Man U seem like a superstar when CR7 was there? (no offense to the current squad as they are still a great team)…maybe we can discuss more in the next CR7 vs CR9 article…

Anyway, this article is about Messi, so cheers to Messi…a top-class footballer and a humble human being…my love for Messi really went out the door when CFC got buried in the CL semi’s but I cannot deny his skills and how far he has come to be the person he is today. Congrats!

As much as I hate him (since CL Final last year), Messi fully deserves this award. CR9 sux! (CR7 was cool though)

personally, i really thin messi fully deserves the award more than anyone else. i always fancy the way he keeps the ball to his feet as if it is stuck to it and penetrate through defenders like a wind. nowadays i cant see anyone could do the same as he does, yes, not even c.ronaldo.

of course that wasnt the only point why i think he’s the best. he’s got even more ‘weapons’ other than that.

one of them that i can think of is the character that he shows. unlike other dribblers (most), messi doesnt fall down easily when tackled, at times he refuses to dive and get up immediately to chase the ball again. this seems like the spirit that c.ronaldo lacks. (so sorry keep comparing CR to messi.
also, he’s recently grown into a big game player as he could manage to score in Champs league final, scoring more and more goals….

nevertheless, i believe messi is not a complete player yet as he has got other points to improve, such as the great shooting accuracy that once maradona posessed, the fearful free kicks that CR does at times….
