The Herald Sun claims that former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien will be moving to Australian A-League in the coming days.
The Ghanaian footballer has been a free agent since his contract with Panathinaikos expired in June, and he now looks set to embark on a new challenge.
Melbourne Victory have confirmed their interest in Essien and they are expected to wrap up the deal ahead of the new season.
“Melbourne Victory can confirm it has made enquiries about securing former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as a full season guest marquee player for the 2016-17 season,” the club said.
“Essien is one of a number of high-profile foreign players the club has investigated during the pre-season, as it looks to bolster its squad for the upcoming campaign.”
Essien has struggled for playing time since leaving Chelsea, with 18-month spell at AC Milan followed by a season-long stint with Panathinaikos.
The injury-plagued midfielder appears to have decided to leave European football altogether and spend the final years of his playing career in Australia.
Michael Essien has won quite a few major trophies during his illustrious career, including the Champions League, two Premier League titles and as many Ligue 1 trophies.
