(GSM) – Gianluca Atzori is not longer in charge of bottom-placed Serie A club Catania. The coach was sacked on Monday night. The Sicilian side has contracted Sinisa Mihajlovic to replace Atzori.
Catania only managed to draw nine points from the first fifteen games with Atzori at the helm. Last season, Atzori was the assistant coach of Walter Zenga who joined rivals Palermo this summer and also has been sacked in recent weeks. Catania’s board took extreme measures after last Sunday’s defeat against Siena (3-2).
“Gianluca Atzori has been relieved of the duties as first-team coach,” a statement from the club said as reported by Corriere Della Sera. “We thank him for his hard work and professionalism, and wish him the best with his career.
“Sinisa Mihajlovic is the new coach of Catania.”
Former Lazio and Inter Milan player Mihajlovic signed a contract until June 2011 with the Elefanti, and will take over from tomorrow, relieving Atzori from his duties immediately.
