Mikel set to sign for Stoke

According to a recent report from the Sunday Telegraph, former Chelsea and Middlesbrough midfielder John Obi Mikel looks set to return to English football by signing for Championship side Stoke City next week.

The 33-year-old, who has spent the last year of his career with Turkish side Trabzonspor, first left England when he moved from Stamford Bridge to Tianjin TEDA after more than a decade with the Blues. Then, after returning from China to join Boro, he was released just a matter of months after first heading over to the Riverside.

A late season surge helped the aforementioned Stoke avoid relegation to the third tier last season, but if they want to start pushing for the top half and beyond again, bringing in an experienced name like Mikel certainly isn’t going to hurt.

There’s still a long way to go before they can be viewed as promotion hopefuls again, but as we all know, anything is possible in that league.
