(GSM) – Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has been ruled out of his side’s FA Cup final and season finale after undergoing knee surgery.
The Nigerian international, who picked up the injury against Bolton Wanderers in April, has failed to shake off the problem with rest alone.
With the injury still causing concern, Chelsea have opted to send Mikel for an operation.
“John Mikel Obi has undergone minor knee surgery and will take no part in Sunday’s final Barclays Premier League match nor the FA Cup final,” read a statement on Chelsea’s website.
“The operation is due to an injury suffered when fouled by Bolton’s Kevin Davies last month and subsequently led to Mikel’s early substitution at Tottenham the following match.”
The procedure has been described as minor, but there has been no word as to when he will be fit and his participation in the World Cup is in doubt.
