Fans in Argentina are slowly starting to lose faith in the Argentinian national team, after a disappointing display in Peru on Wednesday.
The Argentinians came close to winning in Lima, but a late goal from the home side cost the twice world champions two valuable points.
In a poll on the website of Argentinian newspaper ‘El Clarin’, 56.7 per cent of the voters indicated that they consider missing the 2010 World Cup a real risk.
Coach Alfio Basile gets most of the blame: No less than 74 per cent feel that he is responsible for the side’s recent results.
Argentina are currently placed third in the South American qualification group, at four points from leaders Paraguay. Having won only three of their eight games, pressure begins to mount.
If this campaign is compared to Argentina’s road to the 2006 World Cup, the side earned two points less than the amount earned after eight games four years ago.
