Henrikh Mkhitaryan arrived at Manchester United promising so much. 11 goals and 15 assists for Borussia Dortmund in the 2015/16 Bundesliga season thrust the Armenian to the forefront of European football, but since his move to England the winger has struggled somewhat.
The winger has failed to establish consistent game time under manager Jose Mourinho, and only bagged himself four goals and a single assist in the Premier League last season. In this campaign he has netted just once in 12 appearances, and his poor form has resulted in him being dropped from the squad for United’s latest derby game against Manchester City.
With Anthony Martial have reemerged as a prominent player in Mourinho’s thinking, and Marcus Rashford displaying such promise on the opposite flank, it may be hard for Mkhitaryan to force his way back into the United starting XI any time soon. It is for that reason perhaps that the Armenian wants to hold ‘showdown talks’, according to the Metro, in order to decide what role United will play in his future.
Unless he can rack up some more minutes, and quickly, we may well see the winger leaving Manchester having not fulfilled his full potential.
