Momentum is building in Colorado’s MLS title defence, with the Rapids defeating DC United 4-1 on Sunday.
United have the honour of being the last side to inflict the
Rapids with an MLS loss – that coming last campaign in October – but they were unable to hold
back a Colorado tide that resulted in three goals in the last 20 minutes of
play at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Denver. The Rapids had to work hard for the result despite taking a
38th-minute lead when Caleb Folan jinked his way into the area and curled a
left-shot past veteran Canada goalkeeper Pat Onstad. It was a classy way for the 28-year-old fringe Republic
of Ireland international forward to open his account for his new club, having moved
from English Championship outfit Hull City in March. The Rapids held the lead until the 70th minute, when Santino
Quaranta met Chris Korb’s right-wing delivery with a first-time volley past
Matt Pickens in Colorado’s goal.United’s good mood was not to last, however. Just a minute after the restart, Anthony
Wallace’s hanging cross was expertly nodded over Onstad by Scot Jamie Smith.Folan added a third goal for the Rapids on 81 minutes, with
Jamaica striker Omar Cummings making it 4-1 shortly before the full-time
whistle. The result moved the Rapids to the top of the Western
Conference, while DC United slipped to eighth on the Eastern Conference table.
