Bradley Wright-Phillips tied the MLS goalscoring season record after New York Red Bulls accounted for Sporting Kansas City on Sunday.

Englishman Wright-Phillips bagged a brace as the Red Bulls wrapped up their regular-season campaign with a 2-0 win at Sporting KC.

The two-goal performance took Golden Boot winner Wright-Phillips’ tally to 27 goals – matching the marks set by Chris Wondolowski in 2012 and Roy Lassiter in 1996.

Sunday’s triumph also saw the Red Bulls clinch the fourth play-off seed ahead of Sporting KC in the Eastern Conference.

The Red Bulls made a good start in New York with Wright-Phillips giving the hosts a 16th-minute lead.

Wright-Phillips broke the offside trap and placed the ball beyond Sporting KC goalkeeper Eric Kronberg.

The game was not put to bed until the 70-minute mark, Wright-Phillips withstanding two tackles before turning and shooting into the bottom corner.

Columbus Crew defeated Philadelphia Union 2-1 to claim the third seed, albeit in controversial circumstances.

Venezuelan midfielder Bernardo Anor scored the winning goal in the 90th minute after poking the ball into the net but replays suggested the second-half substitute was offside.

Meanwhile, Chivas USA upstaged San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 to avoid finishing bottom in the Western Conference.

Felix Borja’s first-half goal was the difference between the two teams as the Earthquakes were condemned to bottom spot.
