New York Red Bulls and DC United both recorded 3-0 victories in Saturday’s MLS action, while the Columbus Crew also won.
Without a win since a 1-0 opening day victory against the Seattle Sounders, the Red Bulls put in a much improved performance in their defeat of the San Jose Earthquakes.
English striker Luke Rodgers opened his account for the club after two minutes and the former Notts County and Port Vale striker grabbed his second just 13 minutes later.
With the result beyond doubt, legendary French striker Thierry Henry wrapped up the victory with a goal three minutes before the final whistle.
DC United had Chris Pontius to thank for their victory, with the midfielder snaring a double as his side won 3-0 at Toronto.
Pontius scored after just five minutes and Charlie Davies doubled his side’s lead shortly after.
Pontius grabbed his second with 17 minutes remaining to record a win that puts DC United into second position in the Eastern Conference.
In other matches, Robbie Rogers’ 53rd minute goal gave the Columbus Crew a slender 1-0 triumph over Sporting Kansas City, while the Vancouver Whitecaps and Chivas USA played out a goalless draw.
Alvaro Fernandez’s injury time equaliser secured an away point for the Seattle Sounders in their 1-1 draw with the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park.
Carlos Ruiz had initially given the hosts the lead after 32 minutes, but the home fans were left disappointed by Fernandez’s late intervention.
