Columbus Crew came from behind in their 3-1 win over the New England Revolution, while the Philadelphia Union drew in the MLS on Saturday.
Benny Feilhaber’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave New England – who sit second-last in the Eastern Conference – a shock lead in Ohio.
But Columbus top the same conference and came back quickly, with an own goal from New England defender Kevin Alston levelling proceedings just nine minutes into the second half.
Trinidad and Tobago defender Julius James then put Columbus in front with 15 minutes to play, before Venezuelan substitute Emilio Renteria added the finishing touches after 81 minutes with his goal.
Philadelphia Union – for who US international Freddy Adu made his debut on his return to the MLS – lost ground on Columbus after they could only draw 2-2 with FC Dallas, which means they now trail the Crew by three points.
Brazilian striker Maicon Santos gave Dallas a lead after 16 minutes but French midfielder Sebastien Le Toux equalised from the penalty spot.
A goal on the stroke of half-time from defender Brek Shea restored Dallas’ lead, but Le Toux rescued a point for the hosts with another penalty four minutes from time.
In other matches, Arsenal legend Thierry Henry was on the scoresheet but his New York Red Bulls side needed a second-half equaliser from Estonian Joel Lindpere to save a point in a 2-2 draw with the Chicago Fire.
Chris Pontius netted a double in DC United’s 4-0 thumping of the Vancouver Whitecaps and Ecuadorian forward Joao Plata scored the winner in Toronto FC’s 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake.
Jeff Larentowicz’ second-half winner gave the Colorado Rapids a 2-1 win at a 10-man San Jose Earthquakes, while the Seattle Sounders and Chivas USA played out a goalless draw.
