According to AS, Luka Modric and Lucas Vazquez are expected to leave Real Madrid as free agents this summer, with their respective contracts set to expire.
Real have a policy of giving players well over 30 new contracts on a year-to-year basis, and it somehow happens more easily when the team is doing well. That, however, is not the case at the moment, as Real face a very real prospect of elimination from the Champions League after losing the first leg of their quarterfinal duel with Arsenal by 3-0, while trailing arch-rivals Barcelona in the race for La Liga title by seven points, though with a game in hand.
There is clear need for squad rejuvenation at the Santiago Bernabeu. Real are confident of completing the free signing of Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool for the right-back position, and Vazquez appears to be the victim of that. Their primary target for the centre-back role is Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen, and according to their plans, 39-year-old Modric would make way for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.
