Montella please with Roma´s will to win

Roma caretaker coach Vincenzo Montella was delighted with the commitment shown by his players in Friday’s 2-1 win over Lecce.

A last-minute penalty from David Pizarro handed Roma a crucial Serie A win, after Lecce’s Guillermo Giacomazzi had cancelled out Mirko Vucinic’s first-half opener.

Montella said he was pleased with how his players had responded since he took over from Claudio Ranieri in February, and insists that – despite the battling win against relegation strugglers Lecce – his side are on the right track.

“Well, we’re improving,” Montella said. “The team has always tried to create chances in the first half of the match.”

“We played really well in the first half of the match. Maybe we have slowed down a bit during the game, and that could be something to improve on from that point of view.”

“During the second half of the match we have decreased the tension, but the positive aspect of the team, which I really liked and want to underline, has been the answer they have given after the goal: they wanted to do their best to win the match.”

“I have really appreciated their willingness to win.”

“As far as I’m concerned, we have deserved to win this match, since we have always tried to create occasions.”
