Montella upbeat on Roma future

Roma coach Vincenzo Montella is remaining positive as he awaits word of his future at the Serie A club.

Montella took over from Claudio Ranieri after the latter resigned in February, leading Roma on a mini-revival that saw the club narrowly miss out on a Champions League berth.

A loss at Catania last Sunday put paid to those aspirations, though Roma still managed to secure a place in the Europa League with a season-ending 3-1 defeat of Sampdoria on Sunday.

Former striker Montella, a Roma legend who made nearly 200 appearances in his 10 years at the club, expects to learn if he will remain at the Stadio Olimpico in the coming days.

But he believes he has proved he can manage on a permanent basis.

“A couple of weeks ago they told me I had a chance to continue being Roma head coach and that’s the last news I have,” Montella said.

“I’ve never cared about this too much over these last weeks and months. My only thought was doing my job and preparing the team well for the matches we had to play.”

“I’m not being rhetorical; everything was new for me so I didn’t want to waste my energy thinking about it.”

“The situation hasn’t changed, at least that’s what they still tell me. If I wasn’t Roma head coach any more, I would be the first person to know it.”

“I think they’ll tell me something this week, over the next few days, because I need to know in order to think about it and be able to consider and choose my future.”

“My contract needs that so we’ll see what happens in the next few days. My contract doesn’t expire now. It covers next year too but I have the right to end it before June 30.”
