The 29-year-old Argentine winger Nicolas Gaitan does not feature in Diego Simeone’s plans and could be allowed to move away from the Spanish capital during the forthcoming transfer window.
Gaitan managed only 6 La Liga appearances this season, while he added six more across other competitions.
Former Benfica winger is far from satisfied with his current status and is looking for a swift solution that would boost his chances of making it into the Argentina World Cup squad.
Boca Juniors had been linked with a reunion attempt but the Spanish club ruled them out of the race for Gaitan’s signature with a steep asking price of nearly €10 million.
The player himself would prefer to remain in Europe but Spanish reports claim that Mexican hot-shots Monterrey have emerged as serious contenders for Gaitan’s signature.
Sitting top of Liga MX standings, Monterrey have ambitious plans for the future, which involve boosting the current squad with high-profile footballers.
AS Roma striker Edin Dzeko has most recently been linked with a move to Monterrey whereas the club’s interest in Nico Gaitan only confirms the aspirations.
