Inter president Massimo Moratti admits his side’s 3-0 loss to Werder Bremen in the Champions League on Tuesday was hugely disappointing.
The reigning European champions are already through to the next stage of this season’s competition, but missed an opportunity to finish on top of their group with their embarrassing performance against the Bundesliga side.
But despite the loss and the fact Inter have now only won two of their last nine games, Moratti insists under-fire manager Rafael Benitez is not in danger of losing his job.
“As a supporter of Inter Milan, I didn’t like it,” Moratti said.
“We should think positive since there will be an important event. We should believe that the defeat happened because the players felt a bit forced by the important final match and therefore were more careful.”
Asked if Benitez could turn things around at the club, Moratti said: “He has to be able, otherwise it’s impossible to win the Club World Cup. He should lead the team and make sure that everything works well like a well-crafted watch.”
Moratti denied this week’s FIFA Club World Cup was a ‘test’ for Benitez in order to keep his job and is backing his side to lift the trophy in Abu Dhabi.
“This is not a test, this is a true match and I don’t want to create problems neither before nor during the match. We’ll see after the match,” Moratti said.
“The team has all necessary skills and can prove to be able to make it as they have proved recently.”
Inter sit fifth in the Serie A, 10 points behind table-toppers AC Milan, and will face the winner of Al Wahda and Seongnam Ilhwa in the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday.
