Inter president Massimo Moratti has revealed that the Neroazzurri are set to begin squad rebuilding in the wake of Champions League exit.
The Neroazzurri were eliminated from Europe’s top competition despite winning the second leg against Marseille last night and the defeat could mark an end of an era at Giuseppe Meazza.
Inter currently occupy 7th place in the Serie A standings, and club owner Massimo Moratti believes this is the right time to start building a new squad.
“A wise idea might be that of starting to think about the future not in immediate terms, but by building a team that is essentially young,” Moratti said on Inter’s official website.
Moratti admits he is even prepared to sacrifice a season or two in order to make this process a success.
“It would be wise to rebuild from the foundation without the idea of immediately obtaining big results, and hoping the acquisitions you make will turn out to be the right ones.”
That doesn’t mean that the entire team will be replaced, but several senior players might have to start looking for new jobs.
“In addition to the ability of new players with fresher legs, we also need experience. Many will remain, and we’ll also get some new players. It depends on the project that we put together with the coach.”
This basically means that all unsettled players will be allowed to leave, with Cristian Chivu, Wesley Sneijder, Dejan Stankovic and Mauro Zarate all expected to leave come end of the season.
