More injury woe for Wenger

Sadly familiar sight for Arsenal fans

If this really is the year that, as Arsene Wenger says, Arsenal have to deliver a trophy of some sort, they will need all of their top players to stay fit.

Illness

Against that background they would have been disappointed that Cesc Fabregas couldn’t play against Liverpool last weekend due to illness. Perhaps his extra class and creativity may have helped his team-mates to two more points against ten man Liverpool.

The Arsenal midfield, so crucial to the way they play the game, is looking a little stretched at the moment and they can’t afford to lose ground to the other top teams early in the season.

Injury

Alex Song has picked up a calf injury, Denilson has an abdominal problem and, of course, Aaron Ramsey is still on the long road to recovery following his broken leg. These problems, together with Fabregas’ illness and apparent unhappiness at still being at the club would be enough of a problem for Wenger without the even worse news that Samir Nasri will now be out for at least a month.

Nasri underwent minor knee surgery yesterday after picking up a meniscal injury at Liverpool on Sunday.

Luck

The twenty-three year old French international has not enjoyed the best of luck with injuries since he joined Arsenal. In his first season everything went well and he made forty-four appearances but last season pretty much ended for him when he broke his right fibula at a pre-season training camp. Now he faces missing a few more games after just one appearance this season.

Unfortunately for Arsenal fans this situation seems to be a pointer as to why they might just fall short again this season. Presumably Fabregas will be back and Tomas Rosicky appears to be getting back to his best. After that, they are down to Jack Wilshere who is undoubtedly a great prospect but little out of his depth on Sunday.

Limited

The transfer window is still open and surely Wenger will bring in some more players. The central defence looks good but one or two injuries would cause a major problem. The striking options are also limited if the first choice players break down. Of course, the less said about the goalkeeping position the better!

It is a fact that a few injuries cause a major problem for Arsenal whereas Chelsea and Manchester United are able to absorb so many more without suffering irreparable damage.

Talented

Some Arsenal fans are pointing to the fact that they often lose players to injury and are asking whether Wenger’s love of incredibly talented, but basically light-weight players could come back to haunt him.

When you look at the likes of Eduardo, Nasri, Arshavin and other players who have suffered bad injuries, they are hardly the same type of physical specimens as Drogba, Essien, Rooney or Fletcher. Nobody doubts their ability but is it just possible that the type of player preferred by Wenger is not quite up to the physically demanding hustle and bustle of the Premier League?

Prone

If it is the case that Arsenal’s players may be slightly more prone to injury than those of the other top teams, then it goes without saying that they are the team who need the greater strength in depth.

I love watching Arsenal play but I doubt whether it is actually possible for them to come out on top at the end of a long, gruelling season.

This the year we should Really Really Really win something, the Really x1 was 2 seasons ago.

Wenger is trying to rely on his own belief in the players, and them sharing this belief. That is according to AW going to make up for the discrepancy between ability and winning something that we have seen in the past seasons.

Judging on the Stanfield display, the players share a large portion of fear, not belief.

A few quality signings can change that around, but AW is to proud to admit it, seems he prefers to loose, and also destroy the confidence of half a generation arsenal players, ahead of adding quality signings, which could be interpreted that his “belief” was not 100% right.

What bothers me is this, if you get 80% right on players from our own ranks you have done a damn good job, but to make that count for nothing by not accepting the fact that 20% didn’t go all that well, I have no words for it really, why AW, why destroy everything when you are so close to what should be the REAL goal, a squad with both ability and belief to win things.

Now don’t tell me there are no guarantees signings will perform. When some of our own players fail to deliver year after year we simply have no choice.

Cesc lost his belief, he would never consider a move already just because Barca wants him, it is to early for Barca. Sometimes when you love something as much as I am sure Cesc loves Arsenal, it is even harder to accept systematic failures like the squad strength estimation AW does each year. He bases his Trophy promises on “belief” that a handfull players will raise 1-2 levels, and the juniors replacing them when needed will do the same just because they get the chance.

The fact this model has made us CL qualifiers is impressive, but it also has left us in no mans land between Manu/Chelsea, and Pool/Tottenham/mancity/Everton/Villa.

We will have to worry about the latter this year, and with some luck, a FA or league cup trophy will come our way.

Consider the pool game, and Wilsheres involvement; He did really well considering he played alongside supposedly 1st team players, who most of them oazed fear. Imagine if instead of Diaby, we had someone with presence in the game, and the right attitude, Wilshere would have taken inspiration from that, and AW trying to prove otherwise will not change reality, your belief is a power of god AW, even if I wish it was.

“Cesc Fabregas couldn’t play against Arsenal last weekend due to illness” ???? – I think it should be “against Liverpool” or “for Arsenal”.
