Warm
The trouble is, even as an England fan, it is really difficult to warm to John Terry the man. Obviously I don’t know him and he might be the nicest man you could meet, but what we do know of him doesn’t always make for pleasant reading.
Having said that, I am actually beginning to feel a little sorry for him. It appears that if things can go wrong for him at the moment, they will.
Stop
Following Chelsea’s defeat against Inter the other night when driving his car out of the ground, he managed to hit a security guard, breaking his leg. Despite being aware that he had hit something, he didn’t stop at the scene.
The reports from the police and from Chelsea are similar but do have considerable differences.
A Metropolitan police spokesman said,
“A 35-year-old man suffering a broken leg was taken by ambulance to a west London hospital where he is in a stable condition. The 4×4 car did not stop at the scene. Inquiries into the incident continue.”
A Chelsea spokesman said,
“We can confirm there was an unfortunate accident as John Terry left Stamford Bridge last night. When driving out of the stadium at approximately 1-2 mph in a queue of traffic exiting the ground, his car was surrounded by photographers and fans. In the melee that ensued a member of Chelsea’s security staff was knocked to the ground, making contact with the car. He suffered a badly bruised leg. John was aware at the time that there was a lot of contact with his car during the incident, but not that anyone was injured as a result. Upon hearing of the injury, John spoke to the police. He has also been in contact with the staff member to check on his welfare.”
The Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that police were called to Stamford Bridge at 23.13 and that Terry was later breathalysed by Surrey Police at his home in Oxshott.
Of course it would be wrong to draw any conclusions about whether Terry has done anything wrong or not, but the whole situation is not exactly what he needs right now.
Fading
This incident followed the game in which his ever fading dream of lifting the Champions League trophy took another major hit. His form on the pitch has been average at best. He was recently sacked as England captain by manager Fabio Capello following allegations he had an affair with England team-mate Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.
That news followed newspaper claims that he received cash payments for him to give a behind-the-scenes tour of Chelsea’s training ground.
Terrible
All in all, it has been a pretty terrible year for Terry so far and has hardly been the relaxed build up to a world cup that he, or the England fans, would have wanted.
In the past there have been all sorts of allegations about John Terry and his off-field behaviour but never before has he been quite so much in the spotlight. It is looking as though everything off the pitch is having a damaging effect on his form on it.
Accident
I hope that it is proved that what happened at Stamford Bridge was simply an unfortunate accident and that Terry can keep his name out of the tabloid newspapers for the next few months. The fact is that whether you like John Terry or not, he is crucial for England to have any chance in South Africa.
