As a football fan and particularly as an England fan I have a lot of time for John Terry. His desire to win, his determination, spirit, battling qualities and leadership are clear for all to see. The fact that at his best he is probably one of the best central defenders in the world is also undeniable.

Warm

The trouble is, even as an England fan, it is really difficult to warm to John Terry the man. Obviously I don’t know him and he might be the nicest man you could meet, but what we do know of him doesn’t always make for pleasant reading.

Having said that, I am actually beginning to feel a little sorry for him. It appears that if things can go wrong for him at the moment, they will.

Stop

Following Chelsea’s defeat against Inter the other night when driving his car out of the ground, he managed to hit a security guard, breaking his leg. Despite being aware that he had hit something, he didn’t stop at the scene.

The reports from the police and from Chelsea are similar but do have considerable differences.

A Metropolitan police spokesman said,

“A 35-year-old man suffering a broken leg was taken by ambulance to a west London hospital where he is in a stable condition. The 4×4 car did not stop at the scene. Inquiries into the incident continue.”

A Chelsea spokesman said,

“We can confirm there was an unfortunate accident as John Terry left Stamford Bridge last night. When driving out of the stadium at approximately 1-2 mph in a queue of traffic exiting the ground, his car was surrounded by photographers and fans. In the melee that ensued a member of Chelsea’s security staff was knocked to the ground, making contact with the car. He suffered a badly bruised leg. John was aware at the time that there was a lot of contact with his car during the incident, but not that anyone was injured as a result. Upon hearing of the injury, John spoke to the police. He has also been in contact with the staff member to check on his welfare.”

The Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that police were called to Stamford Bridge at 23.13 and that Terry was later breathalysed by Surrey Police at his home in Oxshott.

Of course it would be wrong to draw any conclusions about whether Terry has done anything wrong or not, but the whole situation is not exactly what he needs right now.

Fading

This incident followed the game in which his ever fading dream of lifting the Champions League trophy took another major hit. His form on the pitch has been average at best. He was recently sacked as England captain by manager Fabio Capello following allegations he had an affair with England team-mate Wayne Bridge’s ex-girlfriend.

That news followed newspaper claims that he received cash payments for him to give a behind-the-scenes tour of Chelsea’s training ground.

Terrible

All in all, it has been a pretty terrible year for Terry so far and has hardly been the relaxed build up to a world cup that he, or the England fans, would have wanted.

In the past there have been all sorts of allegations about John Terry and his off-field behaviour but never before has he been quite so much in the spotlight. It is looking as though everything off the pitch is having a damaging effect on his form on it.

Accident

I hope that it is proved that what happened at Stamford Bridge was simply an unfortunate accident and that Terry can keep his name out of the tabloid newspapers for the next few months. The fact is that whether you like John Terry or not, he is crucial for England to have any chance in South Africa.

@Graham…I get it now – for the sake of England’s World Cup hopes, Johnny needs to get his act together soon…or he might also find himself watching from the sidelines….and the plot thickens…wonder what Fabio is thinking…?

We should never portray our athletes as images of perfections, they are all human and are certainly not perfect. I really do feel bad for the guy, his situation is the hardest: Bad Luck+Personal Crap+England Captaincy Crap+ CFC CL Exit+ Man Utd top of League+ Bloopers on the field+ Wayne Bridge akward moments= A really unhappy John Terry…

but what do you have to do, Ill take his personal life and all the crap he has going on righ now anytime if I get the money that he gets paid. It seems like with money, all is fixable. Its amazing how a couple of pieces of paper could let you bounce back – thats if you want to bounce back…

Overall- Terry is undoubtly one of the best defenders in the world it would be just a huge loss for football to see a player of his top class level fade away by a sexual scandal, weve seen it do that to lots of memebers of our pop culture – do you remember Billy: I did not have sexual relations with that woman —– well that depends on what do you define sexual relations LOL

@Brad – Meetings suck…anyway, I don’t think it will ever stop…humans are fascinated by the private lives of other humans…that wheel will forever keep on turning…plus Dave and Graham probably wouldn’t have a job…which would suck for us too, I guess…

you sound like arnold schwarzenegger, CFC Fan. . . haha.

Why do the papers have to put the private lives of the pro footballers, or pros of any sport (TW, if you can find out whose initials that is, though you should) in the pages? They shouldnt do anything except report what they do on the pitch, leave it at that. but no, everyone wants to find a fault, anywhere will do. . . for Christ’s sake, it must stop.

My face still looks like Terry’s face in that pic…I choke up just looking at it…

Graham – I think i’m missing the point of this article…I can’t even think straight…but, I think this is a sympathy article for Johnny boy, whose had a few bad days this season…really, who cares about a rich athlete that’s had a few bad days…I love Terry, but his personal life is his business and he’s paid enough to manage it…

I hope his form picks up again…but the feeling, and i’ll go out on a limb here and say this, but the feeling amongst Chelsea fans is that there is nothing of value that could compare to winning the CL…the CL is what this group was living and playing for – it’s no secret…the EPL title would be nice but it could never make up for the CL exit, and personally, winning the EPL right now just won’t feel like a victory either…maybe once a new group moves in, but right now, with the players they have, we’ve been riding the players emotions for awhile now and we can feel where the emotion is and that is in the Champions League…so, until Roman renovates the playing staff, I don’t think Chelsea will ever have the same motivation to win the EPL like they do to win the CL…

i’ve got more to share, but have to go to a meeting…haha…i’ll be back!
