Moses delivers Wigan vital win

A second-half goal by highly-rated Victor Moses saw Wigan to a 1-0 home win over West Brom in their Premier League clash here on Saturday and give them only their second win in 10 league matches.

Moses struck 20 minutes from time to give his side what could prove to be an invaluable three points at season’s end and start repaying the sizeable fee that Wigan paid Crystal Palace for the 19-year-old Nigerian-born player’s services last season.

Defeat for West Brom leaves them just two points above Wigan and with just one win in their last seven league games after making a bright start on their return to the top flight.

It also gave Wigan coach Roberto Martinez bragging rights in the match that pitched the two youngest Premier League managers against each other – Martinez is 37 and West Brom’s Roberto di Matteo 40.

Both sides had made an entertaining spectacle of a match that was hardly on the top of everybody’s lists for potential entertainment but both goalkeepers, Wigan’s Ali Al Habsi and West Brom’s former England international Scott Carson, were in outstanding form.

The end to end nature of the fiercely-contested clash was illustrated no better than on the hour mark as first Al Habsi saved from James Morrison and then straight from that Carson was forced to save from Tom Cleverley.

However, the hosts broke the deadlock 10 minutes later as the ever impressive Frenchman Charles N’Zogbia set up second-half substitute Moses, who wasted no time in despatching the ball past Carson from the edge of the area.
