A mother and son have been charged in connection with the discovery of a hand grenade outside the home of former Liverpool and Scotland star Kenny Dalglish, police said Thursday.

The live grenade was found on the garden wall of Dalglish’s house in Southport, Merseyside, on July 27, but the incident was not thought to be an attack on Dalglish or his family.

The grenade was found by police searching the local area as part of a continuing investigation.

Nobody was injured in the incident at the house, but the army’s bomb disposal team was called to safely remove the device.

Mark Johnston, 21, from Liverpool, has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit criminal damage with the intent to endanger life.

His mother, Carol Johnston, 50, has been charged with assisting an offender.

Both will appear before magistrates in Liverpool on Friday.

Two men have also been charged with conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the hand grenade incident.

Dalglish, who also managed Liverpool, has recently returned to the club to take up a senior role developing young players.
