Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho has moved to confirm reports that veteran defender Ricardo Carvalho will be leaving the club in the near future.
The centre-back, who has entered the final year of his deal at Santiago Bernabeu, has fallen behind Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Raphael Varane and Raul Albiol in the pecking order, and even spent some time training with the reserves at the start of the season.
Carvalho has since been reinstated into the senior squad, but Jose Mourinho has now revealed that the player will be allowed to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season.
“The reality is that we have many central defenders and they are all good,” Mourinho said at a press conference.
“Ricardo Carvalho is one of them, but is also the oldest. Has fewer years ahead and lower margin for progress. His contract ends and it won’t be renewed.”
The former Portugal international had a bright start to his career at Santiago Bernabeu, scoring 3 goals in 33 La Liga matches during his first season at the club.
However, after making just 8 league appearances last term, Carvalho has yet to play for Real Madrid in this year’s campaign.
