Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will not apologise for his part in a brawl during last week’s Supercopa second-leg, his spokesman has revealed.
The Portuguese manager took part in the fracas in the closing stages of Barcelona’s 3-2 win at the Camp Nou, pushing his finger into the eye of Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova.
Mourinho’s actions were met by a storm of criticism from senior football figures in Spain, but he does not appear remorseful.
Marca.com reported over the weekend that the former Inter and Chelsea man was ready to apologise, but his spokesman, Eladio Parames, has dismissed the claim.
Parames told Spanish newspaper El Mundo: “Jose will not ask for forgiveness. He firmly believes that he was defending the interests of Real Madrid.”
Despite being at the centre of a furious row between the two powerhouses of Spanish football, Mourinho seems unswayed by the condemnation of his actions.
“He doesn’t care what the press says, he only cares about what Madrid’s fans think,” Parames added.
Parames also claimed Mourinho was provoked following ‘verbal aggressions’ towards him from the Barcelona bench.
