As I watched Everton scrape a dramatic 1-1 draw last night with Bolton I thought if only.
The ‘if only’ was if only David Moyes had made the key decisions at key moments. Everton were poor last night and never really got going.
Poor
Everton were truly out of sorts, nothing bounced right for the Blues and Bolton were typically solid at the back.
Everton ran out of ideas and everybody could see it. Everton boss David Moyes took until the 66th minute to take action.
He then put in-form Irish full-back-cum-winger Seamus Coleman on for Russian winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. The decision made an instant impact but most of the Evertonians in the ground were wondering why the 22 year-old didn’t start the game.
The youngster has been in superb form since breaking into the first team. He adds excitement, pace and directness to the Everton team. Yet David Moyes dropped him just when he was looking like gaining a regular place. The decision to drop Coleman was a bad decision.
Awful
Coleman replaced the awful Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. The Russian was never in the game. His touch was heavy and he looked like he couldn’t even muster a run more than a few yards at times. I know he has talent and has shown it in very rare glimpses.
However it seems he is not cut-out for the English game. He came with a hefty price tag of nearly £10million and doesn’t look like he can live up to it. Some people say he needs more time to settle but he has had enough time. I think David Moyes decision to sign Bilyaletdinov may have also been a wrong decision.
Substitution
David Moyes did get the decision right to send on strikers Jermaine Beckford and Yakubu. It was nearly too little too late for the Blues but the decision paid off in injury-time as Beckford curled home a stunning equaliser from the edge of the box.
With Everton playing at home surely Everton should have had two strikers on before the 78th minute. Everton were struggling to make an impact and didn’t really look like scoring. Sending on another striker would have posed more of an attacking threat to the Bolton defence.
A lot of the fans around me also questioned Moyes’ decision not to pick Yakubu, who has been in decent form of late instead of Louis Saha. Now I know we are not managers but some decisions are logical.
Trophies
These are the sort of decisions that can prevent you from being successful. David Moyes is just a few decisions away from being a top manager. Until he starts getting these decisions correct then Everton and Moyes won’t be able to move onto to bigger and better things.
Bigger
He has been linked with the Manchester United job when Sir Alex Ferguson retires. Although I like David Moyes he currently not ready to replace the legendary Scot at United. He hasn’t gained the necessary experience at European level to be the United manager.
This is a problem of his own creation from the decisions he has made. The decisions he makes from now until the end of the season will determine how successful Everton are this season.
He has brought Everton so far in his years in charge and now he has to be slightly braver in his approach to make the next step. If he doesn’t take that braver approach then he may just stay a decent manager instead of a great manager.
Will David Moyes ever become a great manager?
