Moyes pleased as Beckford proves a point

Everton manager David Moyes saluted Jermaine Beckford after the out-of-form striker opened his Premier League account for the Toffees to snatch a 1-1 draw against Bolton.

Beckford, who has struggled to find his feet at Everton since joining from Leeds in the summer, pounced deep into injury time to give Moyes’ men a share of the points at Goodison Park.

Beckford’s equaliser came after Everton had been reduced to 10 men late on when Marouane Fellaini was shown a red card for kicking out at Paul Robinson.

Moyes said he had been guilty of expecting too much from Beckford after the 26-year-old forward stepped up two divisions from League One.

“Anyone who has watched Leeds United over the last few seasons will tell you he can score an array of goals,” Moyes enthused.

“It was a fantastic finish, it really was. We needed something, it was probably the last 10 or 15 seconds of the game.

“I think that is what Jermaine has got but there is a lot he will have to learn in being a Premier League player.

“I put him in a bit earlier than I should have done. My idea was always to bring him off the bench in games where we needed a goal.

“I shouldn’t have started him so early, that was a mistake of mine, but it was a good goal. The one thing we can’t teach him is the one thing he came with, the ability to score goals.”

However Moyes was critical of Fellaini, who was given his marching orders for a petulant kick on Robinson.

“It was correct,” Moyes said. “I’ve no complaints, it was retaliation. He shouldn’t do it, he was stupid.”

Meanwhile Bolton boss Owen Coyle was disappointed his side had not been able to close out the win but was satisfied with his team’s form after a victory over Tottenham in their previous match.

“If someone had offered me four points from two games against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton I would obviously have taken them with both hands,” Coyle said. “I am disappointed because we were in a great position to win the game – but that is the only disappointment.
