Moyes tells Rodwell to focus on next season

Everton boss David Moyes thinks midfielder Jack Rodwell should concentrate on next season rather than pushing for a spot at Euro 2012.

The 21-year-old’s campaign with the Toffees has been hampered by injuries with the player making just five appearances in as many months and his latest setback, a hamstring tear sustained in training on Saturday, looks to have ended his season.

Moyes believes that the midfielder should now focus on getting fit for next season rather than harbouring ambitions of representing England in Poland and Ukraine in June.

“I would advise him to concentrate on next season,” Moyes told BBC Sport.

“Jack has probably missed six months with hamstring injuries, so we have to get him working on whatever work programme they recommend him to do.”

“I think it would be hard for Jack (to represent England). He would have to get back playing regularly.”

Goodison Park staff are keen for Rodwell to see a specialist in Germany with the club trying to arrange an appointment with Bayern Munich’s Dr Muller-Wohlfahrt, who is currently occupied with commitments to the Bundesliga side.

“He trained Saturday morning and felt his hamstring again. He had a scan,” Moyes said.

“It’s a grade one (tear) which is small. We are trying to send him to Germany for treatment.

“Dr Muller-Wohlfahrt is away this week and because he is the Bayern Munich doctor, he has a very big week next week because of their Champions League semi-final.

“So trying to get hold of him will be the hardest thing certainly in the short term.”
