Bayern Munich’s Thomas Mueller has defended team-mate Arjen Robben against criticism from former stars Mario Basler and Franz Beckenbauer.
Both Basler and Beckenbauer have accused Robben of being too selfish in possession, and feel the Netherlands international should choose to pass more often rather than dribble with the ball.
But Mueller said it is unfair to blame Robben for making use of one of his biggest qualities.
“The claims that he is too selfish are simply wrong,” Mueller was quoted as saying by TZ.
“One of his main assets is his outstanding dribble, and the fact is that dribbling is something you do individually.”
“I can’t remember the last time that I saw a dribble involving a one-two.”
Robben has been in and out of the Bayern first team this month, but the club are reportedly still keen to renew the winger’s existing contract, which expires in June 2013.
