Striker Adrian Mutu has been ruled out of Romania’s team to play Austria in a World Cup qualifier on Wednesday because of a knee injury, the Romanian football federation said.
Mutu will return to Florence, Italy – where he plays his club football – to undergo surgery on the knee, the federation added.
The former Chelsea hitman complained of pain in his knee after Romania’s 3-2 defeat to Serbia on Saturday.
Romania stand fifth in Group Seven of the World Cup European zone qualifying with just one win from four games.
Serbia top the group ahead of Lithuania, France and Austria, with the Faroe Islands rooted to the bottom.
