Fiorentina’s Romania captain Adrian Mutu is to undergo an operation after injuring knee ligaments in Wednesday’s 5-2 Champions League rout of Debrecen, his club said Thursday.

Mutu scored the opening goal in the win that took the Italians to within touching distance of qualification for the tournament’s knock-out stages.

Fiorentina did not say how long he would be sidelined, but Italian media speculated he will be absent for no more than a month.
