(GSM) – Mallorca are set for a new revolution following a series of financial downturn that saw them file for voluntary administration.
Miguel Angel Nadal, the former Spain defender who made his name with the Bermellones, will return to the club to assist new coach Michael Laudrup next season.
The versatile defender started his career at Mallorca, and moved to Barcelona, helping the Camp Nou club to a host of silverware in his eight year stint.
Nadal, who wound up his career at Mallorca by winning the Copa del Rey before announcing his retirement in 2005, is looking forward to working with his former team-mate Laudrup at his old stamping ground.
“I am excited to return to Mallorca and, as always, I look at this with responsibility, with a will to teach and to learn,” Nadal told Mallorca’s official website.
“I feel lucky (to work with Laudrup). He’s an ex-team-mate and a nice person, with an attractive playing philosophy – and we all hope we can enjoy a good season.”
But the 43-year-old is not the only one from the Nadal family who has stepped up to help the cash-strapped club.
Tennis ace Rafael Nadal, who is Miguel’s nephew, has become a share-holder for his hometown club.
“It’s an honour to be able to help Real Mallorca, I will help in any way I can,” said Nadal, who claimed his second Wimbledon title last week.
“I am proud to be a part of this new project put together by Majorca locals,” added Nadal. “I am very pleased to have Laudrup as the new coach and as the image for the club.”
