Bayern Munich’s search for a new head coach to replace Thomas Tuchel at the end of the season doesn’t seem to be going too well.
It was said that they were strong favourites to land Xabi Alonso their initial primary target, but the former midfielder has declared his intention to stay with Bayer Leverkusen after leading them to their first-ever Bundesliga title. While the name of Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Hove Albion continues to appear in reports, media in Spain said the Bavarians had made contact with Zinedine Zidane, only to be played down by their German counterparts straight away.
Most recently, it’s been said Bayern were very close to reaching an agreement to re-hire Julian Nagelsmann, whom they sacked in March 2023 and replaced with Tuchel, but now, Italian journalist Rudy Galetti claims Nagelsmann has decided to spurn their advances and remain in charge of the German national team until after the 2026 World Cup.
It remains to be seen if Bayern’s reported interest in De Zerbi becomes more serious after this development, or if they decide to turn elsewhere.
