Napoli 1-1 Inter: Late Billing goal salvages point in title battle

A late Philip Billing goal saw Napoli rescue a deserved 1-1 draw at home to Scudetto rivals Inter, keeping the teams separated by a point at the top of Serie A.

Federico Dimarco put defending champions Inter ahead with a stunning free-kick to silence a sold-out Stadio Diego Armando Maradona after 22 minutes.

Dimarco curled his set-piece effort beyond Alex Meret from 20 yards out as the Nerazzurri threatened to move four points clear at the summit.

Romelu Lukaku and Giacomo Raspadori both went close before the interval, then Inter’s stand-in goalkeeper Josep Martinez made a reflex save to deny Scott McTominay.

Napoli piled on the pressure throughout the second half, and they finally got their reward when substitute Billing poked wide on the rebound with three minutes to play.

Inter have 58 points with Napoli on 57, two ahead of Atalanta, who were held to a 0-0 draw by Venezia earlier on Saturday.

Data Debrief: Title rivals cannot be separated

Inter and Napoli have drawn both of their league games this season, the first time they have shared the points home and away since 2017-18.

It is also the first time the teams have drawn three straight matches in the competition for the first time since doing so from April 2014 to March 2015.

Despite salvaging a point late on, the result continued Napoli’s worrying run of form.

It is the first time an Antonio Conte team has gone five Serie A matches without a victory, with Napoli drawing four times and losing once in that period.
