The Serie A season is set to come to an end sooner rather than later, and what a season it has been. It feels like Italian football is slowly trying to rebuild itself as one of the forces of European football again, attempting to take the reigns from La Liga and Premier League. They’ve always been there or thereabouts but there are a few teams that are really starting to lead the way for the Italian game. Juventus are the primary juggernauts, but you’ve also got the likes of Napoli and Inter Milan.
A strong start
They’re considered to be the closest contenders, and they squared off earlier tonight in what was a pretty entertaining encounter. Napoli were playing for nothing but pride to be perfectly honest, whereas Inter still needed to try and get the win in order to secure their top four spot. In the end, it was the home side that ran out winners in a pretty one sided affair.
Zielinski got the party started within the opening quarter of an hour, as Napoli attempted to keep their phenomenal home form going. Inter know that they need to strengthen in the summer transfer window, and this just kind of confirmed that.
Keep calm
They held firm right up until the hour mark, when they were able to double their advantage. Ruiz went on to score twice in order to secure the win, before Icardi pulled a consolation goal back. Interestingly enough, some feel like Icardi could be playing out the last few games of his tenure at Inter after much speculation over his future.
Napoli will end their season next weekend, when they travel to take on Bologna in what should be a pretty entertaining game. Inter will be hosting Empoli, and as a result of their loss tonight, they’ll go into the final day knowing that both AC Milan and Roma could leapfrog them into the top four. They should be able to get the job done but we can’t pretend like it isn’t going to be an exceptionally difficult ninety minutes for them, especially after receiving a battering like this from a team like Napoli.
