Serie A leaders Napoli were desperate to bolster their ranks during the January transfer window with a number of top attacking targets being linked with Partenopei over the past couple of days.
Deadline Day saw Napoli fail in their attempts to sign the Sassuolo winger Matteo Politano, however, as the contract could not be finalized in time before the window got closed.
The two clubs were negotiating a price and agreed on €28 million plus an extra €1 million in bonuses, whereas the Partenopei were supposed to also send Ounas on loan to Sassuolo.
The 24-year-old was desperate to make the move to Napoli although he was the club’s second choice behind Simone Verdi, who refused to leave Bologna in the middle of the campaign.
Ultimately, the deal fell through as Napoli and Sassuolo failed to conclude the dealings before 22:00 GMT which saw the AS Roma youth product remain at Sassuolo.
