According to The Athletic, Napoli are interested in signing Harry Maguire from Manchester United. They might soon face competition for the England defender though, with Galatasaray also believed to be monitoring the situation closely.
Maguire’s arrival to United from Leicester City in 2019 was heralded with much expectation. He was supposed to be United’s answer to arch-rivals Liverpool signing Virgil van Dijk the previous year and various comparisons between the two arose quickly, as the fee the Red Devils paid for his services overtook that of the Dutchman as the highest ever for a defender.
However, the vast difference in quality between the two players was soon clear, and while Van Dijk established himself as an irreplaceable part of Liverpool’s back line, Maguire has rarely been considered a part of United’s best XI. Fast forward five years, and the 31-year-old is running down the final year of contract, with the club considering whether to take up the option on a further year included in the deal.
As things stand at the moment, Maguire, who started twice in the Premier League under Ruben Amorim and made two more substitute appearances, will be free to talk to clubs outside England from January 1st, and if he agrees a move before the club decide on an extension, it will automatically remove the clause from the contract and take the matter out of United’s hands.
